Romanticize your reading routine
Curating a reading routine is about more than just the perfect book. For me (and I’d wager many of you) reading isn’t just reading. It’s teleportation. It’s soul-soothing. It’s therapy. And when life feels chaotic, there’s something incredibly comforting about settling down with a book and making the moment feel magical.
This isn’t about having the perfect reading chair or a Pinterest-worthy home library (though yes please, if the universe is listening!). It’s about creating an atmosphere that matches your reading vibe. A few deliberate touches can romanticize your reading routine and make it something you not only look forward to, but one that helps you slow down and restore your energy.
Here’s a peek into how I do just that, and hopefully some inspiration to help you create your own version of reading bliss.
Find (or create) a space that works for you
When we moved into our new house, I didn’t have a dedicated reading room, or even a study. Instead, we had a loft area above the main living room, which I turned into a hybrid space that’s part workspace, craft zone, and closet.
I played a few different layouts until I finally settled on one that helps keep my work life and downtime separate. When I’m working, I face out into the park across the street, which helps keep me focused. And when I’m ready to relax, I move to a different part of the loft that faces away from my desk, which makes it feel like a distinct space, even though it’s just a few steps away.
Over time, I’ve added some inexpensive IKEA bookcases, a mix of thrifted and new furniture, and a few personal touches to create a space that fits my vibe (and budget). It makes the space more than just a reading spot, but a space for hobbies, quiet moments, and recharging after a long day.
Full disclosure: while the loft space is primarily my work and relaxing space, my husband and I also use it to share our morning coffee or unwind and chat with friends.
A comfy reading spot
Reading for me is a full-body experience, so comfort isn’t optional.
A couple of years ago, we bought a Koala couch that also folds out into a bed when guests stay over. Most of the time, it sits as a loveseat where I do the majority of my reading. But when the weather turns cold, I turn it into a full reading cocoon.
Last winter, I found a set of sherpa-style sheets that make the mattress and standard couch pillows feel extra plush. Add in a few throw blankets (including the one I crocheted as my second project ever!), a giant Squishmallow, and, more often than not, a couple of dogs. It makes for the ultimate spot that is perfect for rot days, binge-reading weekends, or a late-night reading marathon (without disturbing my husband).
Ambiance: light, scent, sound.
I’ve got a few different options for light, from smart bulbs that let me change the color and level of brightness of light overhead, to my couch-side lamp that casts the perfect rainbow glow. I rotate seasonal candles too. Right now, I’m all about spicy blends (like this one) that are especially soothing during the cooler days.
Hot tip: when a candle’s done, if the jar is pretty, I clean out the jar and pop in a battery-powered tealight. I’ve even filled one with seashells and wireless fairy lights to create a sparkly, beachy mini-lamp that makes me smile every time I see it.
Sound is a must. I usually choose instrumental music, or I’ll search for a specific type of ambiance to suit the mood. Sometimes I want to feel like I’m in a dark academia novel. Other times, I just want to imagine I’m reading in a secluded beach bungalow. Spotify and YouTube are full of atmospheric gems, so there’s always something that matches the vibe.
Reading essentials
There’s something deeply satisfying about nuzzling under the covers and still being able to turn the page. I’m late to the game on Kindle page-turners and stands but, now that I have my very own, I can’t get over how low-key genius the set-up is. Since I got the kind that has forward and backward page turning, once everything else I need is close by, I don’t need to move, unless I’m reaching for a drink or a snack.
Once I’m settled in, I like having a few creature comforts close by. A drink is always first, whether it’s wine, coffee, tea, or just water. The cup doesn’t matter too much, but I do prefer to have something pretty if it’s wine, coffee, or tea; and if it’s just water, then I need it to stay cold!
I keep my headphones nearby in case I’m listening to an audiobook or want some ambient music playing softly in the background. My phone is always within reach too, not just for scrolling TikTok but so I can update Fable, post about what I’m reading, or go in search of my next book.
Once I’ve finished a book, I’ll grab my reading journal and pen to jot down thoughts, update my list, or write a quick review. My favorite journals are from The Quirky Cup Collective (and her pens, stickers, and bookmarks are regular go-tos for me).
Comfy lounge clothes are a must, especially with fluffy socks during the colder months. I also keep little extras like hand cream and lip balm within reach, along with a highlighter and page tabs for saving favorite quotes or moments I want to come back to.
To keep my area flexible, I have a rolling cart and breakfast tray in addition to a side table. This way, all my essentials can move with me, whether I’ve got a bed or couch set-up going.
Make it a ritual that refuels you
The beauty of romanticizing your reading life is that it’s personal. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s, it just needs to make you feel happy.
Whether it’s a single scent, song, a drink or any combination of things, you can create an experience that feels like a true escape. Something that helps you slow down, disconnect from the noise, and come back to yourself feeling recharged.
What do you do to make reading time just a little bit “extra” for yourself? Drop a comment, share your setup, or tag me on Instagram with your book nook. I’d love to see your cozy spaces and hear about your favorite routines!
